Liesbet Delport Dietitian

I am a registered Vitality assessment dietitians for Discovery Health (www.discovery.co.za), which means that, if you are on Discovery Medical Aid, you can have us do three nutritional assessments per year on you and the members of your family, for which you will obtain 1 000 Vitality points per visit and 3000 points in total.

I am CDE (Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology) www.cdediabetes.co.za trained dietitians, which means that if you are a diabetic person on the CDE program, you can be referred by your doctor or nurse educator for a free, yearly consultation, as well as one or more follow up consultations, as requested by your doctor or nurse educator.

How do a dietitian keep up to date? A Dietitian (just like other professional people in their fields) have to keep abreast of the latest nutritional developments by attending congresses and seminars, and read scientific journals in order to obtain continuing professional development (CPD) points to be able to remain registered with the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa; www.hpcsa.co.za). I therefore also belong to ADSA (Association for Dietetics in South Africa; www.adsa.org.za), who organize many of these events. I frequently attend CPD events where we keep up to date with the most recent research and update our diets. I subscribe to the South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition (www.sajcn.co.za) as well as the journal of the Allergy Society of South Africa (www.allergysa.org).

Why should I not follow a fad diet or follow the dietary advice of someone who is not a dietitian? Fad diets look like an easy option, but they rarely produce long term results. To follow a fad diet or the advice of a person who is unqualified in compiling diets, means placing your precious health into an unqualified person’s hands and putting your health at risk.

What is the role of a dietitian?

I am a well-known and reputable private practicing dietitian based in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. I have a passion to provide sound nutritional information based on scientific research and make it our business to keep ahead of developments in nutrition therapy. What are dietitians?A Dietitian is an expert in food and nutrition. A Dietitian is the only registered (at the Health Professions Council of South Africa; www.hpcsa.co.za) healthcare professional dedicated to the preventative, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative aspects of dietetic services rendered in the country.

I am registered with the HPCSA, medical related diet consultations can be claimed from most medical aids. Practically it means: I will help you to promote good health through proper eating and good eating habits. I provide individual dietary consultations to patients and their family members.
